Leg Up Counseling
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Welcome to Leg-Up Counseling

Leg-Up Counseling is a unique program established in 2004. Therapy sessions at Leg-Up Counseling take place on a peaceful, picturesque horse farm surrounded by rolling hills, and beautiful scenery. We serve Harford and Baltimore Counties as well as surrounding areas. Our program utilizes the EAGALA model of brief, intense counseling techniques involving a collaboration of horses, a licensed therapist and a horse professional.

Our clinical team specializes in working with adolescents, as well as couples and families. The staff of Leg-Up Counseling is well versed in therapeutic interventions for behavioral issues, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, bi-polar disorder, adjustment disorder and stress management. Team-Building exercises for various groups such as work groups, scouts, 4-H members and support groups are also available.

Our horses, the volunteers, are natural counselors and teachers. One or more horses participate in all sessions. This program is NOT about riding, however, it is about learning and growing from activities that involve horses.

What is EAP?

EQUINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY  (EAP) is a professional field in which horses are utilized as a tool for emotional growth and learning.  EAP is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse professional.  It is considered a short-term or “brief” approach due to the intensity and effectiveness. Participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses, and then discussing feelings, behaviors and patterns.

The focus of EAP involves using horses in activities to apply certain life skills.  Some tools used in EAP activities include  non-verbal communication; assertiveness, creative thinking and problem solving; leadership, work, taking responsibility, teamwork and relationships; confidence; and attitude.  It is a powerful and effective therapeutic approach.
